The Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep

Everyone talks about the importance of getting a restful sleep, but no one ever explains why. As you sleep, your body performs a number of vital functions: healing damaged cells, boosting your immune system, recovering from a day’s activities, and recharging your heart and cardiovascular system for the next day. When your body isn’t able to recharge properly, you may start to feel drowsy, struggle to absorb new information, and crave more unhealthy foods.

Let’s review the importance of a good night’s sleep:

Prevent Weight Gain

If you are a good sleeper, you tend to eat fewer calories. Poor sleep has been linked to both a higher body mass index (BMI) and weight gain because of its impact on the two important hormones controlling hunger, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone responsible for letting you know you’re full by suppressing hunger and signaling fullness in the brain. Without enough sleep, your body lacks the ability to make leptin and increases ghrelin production. Ghrelin is a hormone released from the stomach that stimulates appetite, increases food intake, and promotes fat storage.

Improve Concentration and Productivity

As adults, we are very aware of how the amount of sleep we get disrupts our daily lives. Insufficient sleep is a major factor in the amount of energy you have, your reaction time, and your ability to make decisions and solve problems. The quality of sleep we get is just as important as the length. When our bodies enter into a deep sleep, we start restoring and repairing our muscles and body tissue. Without it, you may experience body aches or are exhausted more easily. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to many other health issues: obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease

Enhance Physical Activity

Getting enough sleep plays an important role in athletic performance. In particular, REM sleep provides energy to both your brain and body.  Sleep deprivation decreases the production of glycogen and carbohydrates which are stored and used for energy use during physical activity. By ensuring you are fulfilling your sleep needs, your concentration and ability to remain focused increases.
